At Goodwill, our mission is to provide employment and training opportunities to people with disabilities and other barriers. Checkout some of the top interview tips to know before, during and after you begin your job search journey! Consider stopping by any of our five Community Employment Centers to meet with a Career Advisor. You may decide to enroll in our Job Readiness Certification Program. The two-week program teaches you how to create a résumé, communicate effectively, interview with confidence, and follow up. This is a great way to be prepared before you begin your hiring journey.

Before the interview

Goodwill’s “Ace the Interview” workshop is available every Monday from 10 am to 11 am at most of our Community Employment Centers. This free workshop will prepare you with mock interviews. If you are not able to attend, the following five tips will help you get ready:

  1. Start by researching the company and position you are applying to.
  2. Practice your answers to common interview questions, this ensures your answers will be smooth and natural.
  3. Re-read the job description, the last thing you want is to be put on the spot and have no knowledge of what you are interviewing for!
  4. Select your interview outfit ahead of time.
  5. Print and take five copies of your résumé with you.

During the Interview

After you have prepared for the big day by taking Goodwill’s Workplace Communication workshop (Every Wednesday from 10 am to 11:30 am), remember to relax and remain calm, cool and collected. Try to hit the following marks too:

  1. Arrive on time, relaxed and prepared for the interview.
  2. Make a strong first impression by being polite and offer warm greetings to everyone you meet.
  3. Upon meeting your interviewer, you should stand, smile and make eye contact. Offer a firm but friendly handshake.
  4. As the interview starts, remember to practice authenticity and confidence in your answers. Provide focused responses that show your skill level, experience and why you are the best candidate.
  5. As you are coming to the end of the interview, you will need to make sure you have prepared a few questions to ask your interviewer. This shows you have done research and you have been paying attention.

After the Interview

The final stage of the interview process has begun. You thanked your interviewer in person, but what about the following days? It is important to ensure they remember the great impression you made!

  1. Remember to personally thank everyone who interviewed you, whether in person, by email or postal mail, it is a very polite gesture to ensure you stay fresh in their minds.
  2. Follow up. After you have thanked everyone, it is always valuable to call and touch base to determine if you will be moving forward or not.
  3. Do not get discouraged. Unfortunately, you may not land every job you interview for but don’t give up!
  4. Learn from previous mistakes. Determine why you may not have obtained the position and work on how you can improve your chances in the future.
  5. Finally, always remember that no one is perfect. Get out there, do your absolute best and your time to shine will arrive!

Patience, practice and preparedness are key in your career path journey. They are just as important as your resume and skill set!
