I can hardly believe we are in our last quarter of 2019. It has been a very busy and productive year for Goodwill San Diego. Our ambassadors (employees) and I have worked together to achieve our organizational goals and I have had the opportunity to meet with wonderful community leaders to explore ways we can work together to improve San Diego County and the people we serve.
I believe the establishment of our Core Values has helped us to grow and develop and is a big part of our success in 2019. The decisions we make are a reflection of our values and beliefs, and they are always directed towards a specific purpose. That purpose for Goodwill San Diego is to fulfill our mission of providing training and employment opportunities to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Learn more about our Core Values in the article below.

This quarter will be busy and a great finish to 2019. We are currently conducting a community needs assessment to help us determine how best to serve our community, we’re opening a new store in East Chula Vista on November 6 and the end of the year is historically the busiest time for donations.

I am ever grateful for our community’s outpouring of generosity and support for Goodwill San Diego!

Together, we are Making Good Happen!

ALEIGHA’S STORY

Everyone’s journey presents itself with inevitable obstacles and challenges to overcome. It is the approach we take that makes us who we are. Aleigha is a great example of an individual who attempts to make the most of her life by continually looking forward and making the best of every situation.

Aleigha was faced with many struggles, but took life on with a positive attitude and persistence. Aleigha struggled with school, but always had her parents support. With their love and guidance, Aleigha was able to obtain her high school diploma in 2009. She then went on to college, but ultimately made the decision that it was not for her.

During this time, her father was diagnosed with cancer which impacted her heavily. She wanted to be as supportive as possible and knew that becoming financially independent would be a big help to her family. She decided it was time to get a job.

Finding a job is never an easy task, and even harder when you have a disability that restricts you from standing for long periods of time. This did not stop Aleigha from pursing her goal of independence. Aleigha is now working at Goodwill in the Supported Employment program. She is preparing for the future by learning job skills that will lead to a full time job and a place of her own. Aleigha has been in the program for over 3 years and plans to transition into Goodwill’s Individual Placement program to further her career.

“The Goodwill Supported Employment program has changed my life for the best. It makes me flashback to the past and appreciate how I’ve grown from the person I used to be. Goodwill has helped me become more independent by setting achievable goals.” Through Goodwill’s program, Aleigha has grown and matured, she is now less nervous, and more confident. Her patience and perseverance has enabled her to overcome the tough times. Aleigha now knows she can work hard and keep a job.

We use our Creativity to solve problems, improve our systems, and encourage ideas to help us continue to grow.

We achieve our goals through Collaboration, working across departments and in our community to find the greater good and build synergy.

ABOUT US

DONATE AT THE PUMP

Goodwill San Diego has partnered with ARCO and ampm convenience stores to raise funds at the pump. From Monday, October 7 through Friday, November 15 community members can donate at any participating ARCO pump or ampm to fund Goodwill job programs that are providing training and employment to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Last year, we served more than 4,500 people in San Diego County. This included young adults, people with disabilities, veterans and individuals with the desire to become independent from Social Security Disability Insurance. We also employ nearly 1,400 people and approximately 50 percent are a person with a disability or other barrier to employment. We believe everyone who has the desire and the right attitude can become gainfully employed.
