Summer was busy for Goodwill San Diego. We helped 327 people find jobs, we hired 156 people to work for Goodwill in over 44 locations across San Diego County, over 345 people participated in skill development workshops and we opened a beautiful 4,600 sq. ft. Community Employment Center in San Ysidro.
Many lives were improved because of Goodwill San Diego and the generosity of our donors. In today’s newsletter I am sharing just one of many success stories. I encourage you to visit our website at sdgoodwill.org or follow me on LinkedIn to read many more stories about how Goodwill San Diego is changing lives.
The calendar says it is fall, but the weather in San Diego still feels like summer. Early in the morning I can feel a hint of autumn and I anticipate the cool beautiful days ahead. I am also full of excitement and anticipation as I think of the many lives we will improve in the last quarter of 2018 through our mission of providing training and employment opportunities to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Thank you to the residents of San Diego County for supporting our mission, together we change lives!
Making Good Happen!
President and Chief Executive Officer
Core Values: Credibility • Creativity • Collaboration
Maggie joined our dedicated Goodwill workforce as a textile sorter and hanger on April 28, 2011. She continued to grow, learning new tasks quickly and eager to take on more responsibility. On January 16, 2018, Maggie began her individual placement, as a Process Worker I and she has been doing great; cross training in processing and retail floor tasks. Management and co-workers alike describe Maggie as a team player, very dependable and optimistic. She has received recognition by her fellow co-workers for team work, job knowledge, safety, positivity, and flexibility. Since Maggie joined the Clairemont Retail Store, she has quickly proven herself to be an efficient and valuable member of the team and a great asset to the store’s success.
Maggie shared that her experience at Goodwill has taught her how to process donations and provide excellent customer service. She really enjoys working with others and helping her co-workers build up their skills, which is what she considers one of her most important achievements. In the future, she definitely sees herself growing within Goodwill and becoming a manager someday.
SAN YSIDRO COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT CENTER
Our plan to serve the San Ysidro community with opportunities to learn soft skills, attain a job, pursue new career opportunities, and improve employability, has become a reality. After opening our new Outlet facility and Distribution Center on Via Segundo Road in San Ysidro, we were able to develop the Outlet’s old location.
We remodeled the warehouse building and turned it into a state-of-the-art facility including a training classroom for free workshops and community learning opportunities. The square footage of the new Community Employment Center is 4,626 square feet, which includes 3 private offices, 2 conference rooms, a reception area, 2 restrooms, a large computer job search area and 2 meeting rooms that are approximately 800 square feet each. Additionally, within the next 60 days, we will be installing an array of solar panels on the roof to help reduce our electrical demand from the grid.
Construction lasted about 90 days and our Grand Opening was on October 12. We are very pleased with the outcome. If you are searching for a new job or want to improve your employability, please stop in and let one of our talented career advisors help you. The new Center is located at 630 Front Street in San Ysidro.
CLAIREMONT RETAIL STORE AND DONATION CENTER
We opened our Clairemont Retail Store in August of 2012. The Clairemont store has a retail floor of 7,842 sq. ft. and a high volume donation center. It is our second highest retail site in donations, with over 36,000 donations in July alone. To support their retail store and donation site, the store operates with 38 employees. Among their ambassadors, they have 6 Supported Employment employees working in production, and 2 roster positions dedicated to Workforce Development. These positions are filled by Goodwill San Diego’s Young Adult and Veterans program participants.
